TO INITIATE A DOWNLOAD: While you're still in the Search window, select a file to download by clicking once on it. Now choose from the following options to get the download started:

Single right-click on the file name, then choose Download from the pop-up menu. Click the "Downloads" button on the toolbar to view the downloads in progress.

This method is good for initiating downloads without leaving the Search window. You can go to the Downloads window at your convenience.

Single-click the download icon in the "Results" title bar (next to the magnifying glass icon), then click the "Downloads" button on the toolbar to view the downloads in progress.

Another, yet slightly faster way to initiate downloads without leaving the Search window.

Double-click on the file name. Not only does this start the download, but it automatically opens the Downloads window for you, making this perhaps the most convenient method.

MANAGING DOWNLOADS is easy. Select a file name in the Downloads window and right-click it to open a menu of options related to the download in progress. These are your options:

  • Preview: This allows you to open a single selected file using the program appropriate for the file type, while it is still downloading. The file must exist in either the temporary directory or the downloads directory. You can also double-click the item to preview it.

  • Explore: This will open the directory containing the partial or completed file using Windows Explorer. This is a useful shortcut for managing your downloads.

  • Start: This will start a transfer, if it can be started, or restart selected items that have been paused. Most downloads that have stopped can be restarted. You can also use this to resume a failed or aborted transfer. It is possible to go over the concurrent limit by starting downloads manually.

  • Pause: This lets you pause any transfer in progress, it can be restarted later by clicking 'Start', as stated above.

  • Clear: Choosing this will remove selected red (failed transfer) or green (completed transfer) items from the display. It does not affect your files.
BearFlix will automatically clear failed or completed items if you put a check mark in the boxes at the bottom left of the Downloads window.

  • Clear All: Choosing this will remove all red or green items from the display. It does not affect your files.

  • Find More Sources: When the status column says "need more sources", this means that for some reason the computer you were trying to download from is unavailable. Clicking this option will allow you to try finding that same file on another computer.

  • Cancel: This cancels only selected downloads, and applies to downloads that are paused, waiting to connect, waiting for a retry, or transferring. The partial results of the download, if any, are not removed from your temporary directory. If you start an aborted download over again, BearFlix will resume with the partial contents of the file if it exists.

  • Block: This is used to stop BearFlix from trying a source that wouldn't be worth downloading from. For example, a source that can only give you 1Kbps when you're trying to download a 600MB file is not a desirable source.

  • Cancel All: Cancels all files in the Downloads window, no matter what their status is.
Do not choose this menu item accidentally!

  • Delete:This option deletes a completed download. Be careful when using this option!

DOWNLOAD INFO: The columns in the Downloads window act the same way as in Search. In this window the default columns are File Name, Size, Status, Progress and Time. Here you can also add extra columns by right-clicking on any column header, and choosing from the menu.

These are the available columns in the Downloads window:

File Name: You'll notice a plus sign [+] beside many of the file names. This means more than one source has that file, so they are grouped together for better downloading. You can click the plus sign to view information for each source individually.

Size: This is the size of the requested file. If the file exists in your temporary directory, two sizes are displayed. The first is the size of your file. The second is the size of the requested file. If the file you requested is of a different size than indicated in the search result, the total size is updated to reflect the actual size when known.

Status: This is the status of the transfer. Sorting on the status column will group the transfers logically. When at least one byte of the requested file is received, the status changes to a percentage indicator. For resumed downloads, this will start off at the percentage of the file you already have. For a new download, the file is not created until the percentage indicator appears.

Progress: This indicates in percentage how much of the files has been downloaded during the transfer. When a transfer terminates, this column will display the reason. Some of them are Busy, Canceled, Not Found and Done, among others.

Time: For transfers in progress, this is the estimated time until the transfer is done. If the source was busy, this shows the number of seconds until BearFlix will retry the download and try again. For other active items, this shows the number of seconds for the current status to change until BearFlix gives up on the transfer. If this is a completed item, the total elapsed time for the transfer is displayed.

Bandwidth: The amount of bandwidth used by the connection, both incoming and outgoing. If the transfer is complete, this shows the average throughput for the entire transfer.

Host: The IP address and port number of the computer you are downloading from is displayed here.

Version: As in the Search window, this column tells you the name and version of the file sharing program being used by the source.

SORTING: Click on a column header to sort that particular column. The columns start in their default sort order. Clicking once will sort the column one way. A second click will sort it another way. The third click brings it back to default.

OPENING DOWNLOADED FILES: When the download is complete, there are three different ways to view the file. Any one of these methods will launch Windows Explorer, which will open to the folder containing your completed downloads:

  • Highlight a file name, then click the Explore button on the Downloads window toolbar.
  • Right click anywhere in the Downloads window, then choose Explore from the menu.
  • Go to File > Explore Downloads.

Note: The first method requires that you highlight at least one file name, which will activate the Explore button. With the other two methods it doesn't matter, which is good for users who are set up to have completed downloads automatically cleared.
Now you can view and check the quality of your downloaded file before copying it to a shared folder.
