Getting Started: Downloading

This is the final segment of four introductory tutorials on getting started with BearShare. To understand it fully, be sure you have read the searching for files page first. Detailed information about BearShare can be found in the User Guide starting with the Using BearShare section.

How to download files

First of all, you must remain in the Search View to initiate a download. This can be done four different ways:

  • Double-click a file in the search results list. This will automatically switch you to the Downloads View where you will see the file being downloaded.
  • Right click a file in the search results list, and choose Download from the menu that appears.
Then go to the Downloads View to see the file being downloaded.
  • Keyboard shortcut: Select a file in the search results, and hit Ctrl+D on your keyboard.
Then go to the Downloads View to see the file being downloaded.
  • Select a file in the search results list, and click the Download button on the tool bar.
Then go to the Downloads View to see the file being downloaded.
The Downloads View
The Downloads View is where you can monitor the status and progress of all your active downloads. Each column provides useful information about files that are downloading or waiting to be downloaded.

Most of the available columns are hidden by default. To unhide them, right click any column header to bring up a list from which you can choose one or more extra columns to appear alongside the existing ones. BearShare will remember these settings, so you only have to unhide a column one time.

The default columns are:
  • File Name: The name of the file you are downloading.
  • Size: This will display how much of a file you have downloaded, and how big that file is in total. For example, if you see something like 830 KB/4.2 MB, that means you have downloaded 830 KiloBytes of a file whose total size is 4.2 MegaBytes.
  • Status: This column displays what condition your download is in at the moment. There are many conditions; a few of them are Active, Queued, Waiting, Transfer, Cancelled, Done, and others.
  • Progress: This column displays how much progress your download is making. When the download is actively transferring, you will see a progress bar that shows how much of the file has been downloaded, expressd in percentages.

When the download is not active, either because it is waiting to start or because it was interrupted for some reason, you may see one of these messages: Active, Trying, Push, Offline, In Use, Timeout, and others.
  • Time: This column shows how long it will take for the download to finish.

More detailed information about downloading can be found on the Downloads tutorial page in the User Guide.
